Morning, hopefully the world sorted itself out overnight, let’s see..
I’ll share this for interests sake and also just as a promotion of X for being a very useful place to be if you want to harness the hivemind/nerdbase. This is a nice visual breakdown of the the Government’s new National Wealth Fund. TLDR from the creator is '“It simply diverts funding from govt through several layers of govt owned "banks" and finance bodies, who serve no real purpose but will want a slice of the pie. It has no real outcomes ie; renewables—just profit and big pay packets. Risks and losses will be borne by govt…” - Sounds mega, government obviously being the taxpayer.
X is inhabited with millions of autists and nerds who aren’t necessarily working in the field that they’re interested in, but have an autistic level special interest in certain topics and spend their waking hours KNOWING ABOUT THEM. They debunk and clarify information 24 hours a day 365 days a year and because their income isn’t connected to what information they share, the likelihood of them being captured by anything other that their own bias (which you can filter for by reputation/past performance) is vastly reduced.
If you don’t know who the guy being QT’d is, he’s Jason Calacanis, a multimillionaire VC guy, prominent in the SF tech world, one of the hosts of The All In Podcast with some other VC tech guys. He’s a textbook example of someone who’s completely inside the Democrat voting information bubble in the US. One of the worst cases of TDS - Trump Derangement Syndrome you’ll see. That is until they had him on the podcast and he had to admit that having actually had a conversation with him, he liked him. That, his comment above and after seeing similar reactions from others like him leads me to lean further and further towards the possibility that A LOT of people are so sheltered from reality inside their information bubble that they really thought the Biden cognitive decline stuff was lies from the Right. That seems impossible, but that’s what it looks like. Anyone paying attention knew Biden was like this (to be fair not quite THIS bad) in 2020. The only question remaining for me is was him doing the debate with Trump a genuine gamble by his handlers, hoping that if they juiced him up enough they’d be able to scrape through it and uphold the lie, or was he put in that position deliberately because he’d served his purpose and they wanted someone else in. I’d have said the second initially, but the current panic amongst the left in the US makes me think the former. I think we’ll see that now the cat is out of the bag and they need him out we’ll see him allowed to speak freely and put in situations where he has to more often in the hope there’s a mega-gaff that makes his position untenable. Maybe that was yesterday, mixing up Putin and Zelensky, we’ll see.
Did you know Biden used to have a mullet? Well now you know.
I’m a fan of this personally. What’s interesting is that it’s another example of the current US administration just being ignored and movements being made in preparation for them to leave. Orbán is now holding the Presidency of the EU Council and knows Trump is going to win in November. He also knows that he probably wouldn’t be welcome or would be treated like a baddie if he went to Biden’s team because he respects borders and National identity, so he gets his meeting with Trump. Orbán is currently doing an international tour trying to push for peace between Ukraine and Russia, Putin appears to be waiting for Trump to win as his best chance of ending the conflict too. All of these movements with Saudi and the petrodollar (which might be nothing), BRICS and now this stuff with Orbán may come to nothing dramatic in the short term, but if the US still had the position it used to hold 20 years ago, everyone would be too intimidated to do it, so that they are, is notable.

My potentially divisive opinion, I know Hugh doesn’t really agree with me on this , is that these should all go and it shouldn’t be a thing. If you want something done well and a system to work effectively, you should hire the person who is the best you can find at that job. Or train a person with the most interest and aptitude to learn to do it to the standard that you require. The end result is the important factor, anything else is a distraction from that. By all means ensure that it is well known that roles are open to application from anyone, but the end result of who gets the job is merit based only. Many people completely fail to realise that a huge contributing factor to the downtrend in our capacity to do anything properly, that feeling that things are going in reverse, that we should be on Mars but New York has only just realised that wheelie bins exist, is down to having people in in roles they are completely unsuited and not sufficiently qualified for. They are an anchor holding us back. But it’s more dangerous than that because they know that they’re not good enough and that competence shows them up. So they become a virus that seeks to replace competency with people like them, but it goes without saying that those they hire and promote can’t be more effective than them, that would make them look bad, the chosen one must be ever so slightly more incompetent. And so we see a race to genuine retardation in both meanings of the word.
I just want the best person for the job, doing the job. There’s loads of things I’d like to be in life, but I’m precluded from them because I’m shit at those things. That seems sensible.
To add to what’s been said about the prison situation over the last couple of days, it’s worth remembering that the Shadow Cabinet is a thing that exists. When Starmer tries the ‘oh I just walked into the room and they told me everything is awful - I had no idea’ routine, that’s only true if whoever was the shadow minister was completely incompetent or lying to him.
This is correct. As I’ve said repeatedly on Horizon Scan, if you make it possible, they will come. If you make it impossible, backed up with lack of incentive to come, they will stop coming. I’ll also add that Farage made a huge error yesterday in demoting Ben Habib.
Short and late one today, I was back at the vets - I forgot, got told off by the misses, winner. Irritating as well that there’s nothing in my X feed than Biden being a mong, so hopefully some more variety tomorrow.
Have a good one.
